There are a few things I enjoy about snow – how it makes everything look so clean and fresh and new, how it causes a hush like a big blanket being thrown over everything, how it sometimes means I don’t have to go into work and can hang out in my pajamas all day.
But today was not one of those days. And one of the things I hate most about snow is driving in it. To be honest, this didn’t used to bother me a whole lot. I’ve never been a big fan, but I managed. It was just one more thing to pay attention to when I was driving. But when I was in grad school, I was driving to Kansas City from Lawrence on the highway and slid on a patch of ice. Now, if you’ve never crashed a car going over 50 mph, I’ll just let you know that it’s something you don’t want to do. I slid off the road and onto the middle island, crashing into the barrier on the other side – the barrier that just kept me from flying straight into oncoming traffic. I realized that the side of my car that had smashed into it was the side with the gas tank, and I thought it might be a good idea to get out and just make sure all was okay. After being out of my car just over a minute or two, another car came flying off the highway in my direction, missing me by several feet. I opted to wait out the arrival of the police in my car.
Needless to say, driving in snow was a different story after that.
This morning I opted to drive into work a little later, and I managed to hit the streets in full snow and ice accumulation. After dropping Aedan off, I managed to get completely stuck on a bad icy patch on one of our busiest roads. I managed to reverse myself an entire block to turn around after several other cars also got stuck in the same area. I was less than thrilled to get into work after that, as my boss will tell you. There were many curse words to be heard out of my mouth, especially after I then managed to slip on the ice twice while I was walking to and from my car after a meeting. While I missed falling flat on my ass, my body can feel the abnormal contortions it underwent to avoid that particular moment of grace.
So today? Today I really, really hate the snow.
