Simplifying – What to Keep

by kristendom on February 14, 2013

One of the keys to simplifying is to get rid of excess stuff. At the same time, you still get to keep some things – things that you need, things that you use, and things that you really love. In order to simplify our house and lives, I think it’s just as important to identify those things about our house that I really, really love. These are the things around which we’ll decorate, plan rooms, and generally just enjoy.

Keri Abell original

I commissioned this painting by my younger sister a little while ago, and she did not disappoint. I can’t tell you how much I love this painting and love having it in our house. If we should ever move, I will most likely use the colors in this painting to plan a room just for it.

Master Bed
My canopy – decked out for Xmas (and two bedspreads ago)

Several years ago, Sean and I planned to use our tax return to finally buy that bed we’d been meaning to get ever since moving into our house a couple years earlier. I did research and found several clean and contemporary headboards and found a couple that we both agreed upon would fit us well. Then we went to the store, and I came across a canopy bed. I’d wanted a canopy bed ever since I was a little girl, so I instantly fell in love. This particular canopy can also be a four-poster, which is how we have our bed set up now. Regardless, I love love love this bed, and I finally have our bedroom almost completely decorated…only about eight years after moving into our house.

Wine glasses

I haven’t quite found a place for these Bulgarian (I think) wine glasses that my mom recently gave me, but I adored them as a girl, and when she was getting ready to get rid of them, I snapped them up right away. I’m thinking a glass tray for our bedroom, or possibly our living room. Wherever they end up, I know they’ll be something I want to keep.

Chandelier

I adore this chandelier in our dining room, even if the light it gives off is so completely funky that it screws with any photo you might take in that room. I mean, really, wine bottles? On a chandelier? What’s not to love?

Polka Dot Shoes

I’m also totally keeping these shoes, no matter what else I get rid of in our house. Seriously, would you get rid of them?

What items do you have that you’re in love with, need, or use? What items would you decorate a room around?
